Aftercare Advice

A little care goes a long way.

Your portrait has been created with care and high-quality materials, built to last. These simple guidelines will help keep it looking beautiful for years—the colour stays rich, the detail stays sharp, and the whole thing ages gracefully.

Simple care = huge difference
Keep out of direct sun
Frame it properly
Store it safely

Small habits. Big difference.

The way you display and store your piece shapes how beautifully it holds up. Whether it’s graphite, oil, or a fine art print, a bit of attention now pays off for years.

Years, not months. The right framing, gentle handling, and a good environment help your artwork stay at its best.
General care

The golden rules for all artwork.

The main enemies of artwork are sunlight, dampness, heat, and rough handling. Keep your piece in a clean, stable environment and it’ll stay looking beautiful for decades.

  • 01Keep away from direct sunlight—it’s the biggest threat to colour and material strength.
  • 02Avoid damp spaces like kitchens and bathrooms.
  • 03Don’t place near radiators, fireplaces, or heat sources.
  • 04Always handle with clean, dry hands.
  • 05For the best long-term protection, keep it framed.
Sun fades everything. Even the best materials lose colour and strength when they sit in bright light all day.
Moisture is sneaky. Damp air damages paper, paint, and frames slowly and silently—sometimes you won’t notice until it’s too late.
Heat causes trouble. Temperature swings and nearby heat sources stress materials and can shorten your artwork’s life.
Fingerprints mark. Natural oils from your skin can leave marks, especially on paper-based work.

Pencil & Graphite Drawings

Graphite has a soft, beautiful quality, but that surface is more delicate than people think. A little protection goes a long way.

  • Graphite smudges easily, so never touch the surface directly.
  • Always display behind glass to protect from dust and marks.
  • Use a mount so the artwork doesn’t touch the glass.
  • Store flat or upright in a dry place.

Oil Paintings

Oil is wonderfully rich and long-lasting, but it needs time to cure and careful handling. Even when dry to the touch, it’s still working.

  • Oil paintings cure for weeks or months after they feel dry.
  • Don’t touch the painted surface.
  • Keep away from extreme temperature changes and moisture.
  • Never clean with water or chemicals.
  • Gently dust with a soft cloth if needed.
  • Framing adds protection, though glass isn’t required.

Fine Art Prints

Prints are on high-quality artist paper—beautiful and special, but they need careful handling to stay that way.

  • High-quality paper, but still needs care.
  • Never bend or roll once it’s unframed.
  • Display behind glass to protect from dust, moisture, and fading.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight.
  • Handle by the edges to avoid fingerprints.

Why framing matters

Framing isn’t just about looks. It’s a real protective barrier between your artwork and the world.

  • Glass protects from smudges, dust, and accidental damage.
  • A mount creates space so artwork doesn’t touch the glass.
  • A solid frame adds structure and reduces handling damage.
  • Even without glass, framing still protects.
Storage advice
Lay it flat Use acid-free paper No weight on top
When you’re not displaying it

Store it right, even between showings.

If your artwork isn’t on the wall yet, storage is just as important as display. A safe, dry place protects it before it even sees the light.

  • 01Cool, dry place—that’s the rule.
  • 02Lay flat where possible, or stand it upright with support.
  • 03Wrap in acid-free paper for protection.
  • 04Don’t stack heavy things on top.

The goal is simple: no pressure, no damp, no bending, nothing that marks the surface.

One more thing

Your artwork is an investment in memory.

It’s not just a picture. It’s something you commissioned, something personal, something made by hand. With basic care, it’ll stay beautiful for decades.

Whether it’s on display, given as a gift, or stored safely for a future space, treating it with care now means it’ll keep meaning something later.
